Children will have fun with these games for any time or the end of the term or school year. There are 12 cards to choose from. The aim of the game is for children to choose a letter of the alphabet for their chosen card and then answer the questions verbally or written e.g. the blue card catergories are hospital, family, cafe, chemist, winter and summer. If a child chooses the letter C, then answers could be: cousin for family; coffee for cafe; cough medicine for chemist, cold for winter and cool for summer. Each of the 12 cards has 6 different categories on them. The game could be carried out with a timer or a bell ring to signify the end. Add points to make it more interesting. Use these spelling certificates to motivate and reward your children for their read, write and spelling work. Each of the 10 certificates is the same but a different colour. You can use the certificates as they are or use as a differentiated assessment tool. E.g Yellow might equate to 5 words children can spell Blue could be 10 etc. Write the number of words on the certificates that children can read, write and spell. The final certificate is white - you could colour this yourself or the children can. Suitable for pupils learning English as a 2nd language too.

A great little back to school quiz or anytime game encouraging team work, speaking and listening and vocabulary extension. Examples of pictures/sayings are ‘the hungry caterpillar’ and ‘the cat in the hat’. What to do Show the colour page with 28 pictures on. Children work in pairs or teams to try to work out the common sayings or idioms. Give them the grid template provided to write their answers on. Sheet 3 is the answer sheet, although children may come up with plausible alternative answers of their own. Another way of doing the quiz, is to give the children the answers, but in a mixed up form, and ask them to match them to the pictures. Children can go on to research any saying they do not know such as ‘pigs might fly’ or the’ elephant in the room’. This is a good resource too, for English language learners.

Cut out some of the picture symbols and paste into your workbook. Write 2 sentences next to each one. E.G. Opening window picture symbol I open my window in the summer. A fun way to end or start the term. The game is based on Catch Phrase where children guess what the popular phrase or word is based on the pictures they see. This involves thinking and speaking and listening. Children enjoy this game in groups. There are 35 picture cards which can be cut up and laminated(for reuse) or pages can be used as they are with 4 cards to a page. There is a suggested answer sheet at the end, that children or the teacher, can use to mark off answers. (Some pictures could have an equally feasible alternate catch phrase or word). As a follow up, children could make up their own pictures based on familiar sayings or those on a theme such as football or animals. Children can research any sayings they are not familiar with. There are 4 catch phrases on each page and 3 on the final page. It is fun to work against the clock! Children can work in pairs or teams to try to work out the answers. An answer sheet is provided for them to mark off. Cut out the cards and laminate for a game you can keep and reuse. As an extra activity children can research and write the meanings of the phrases.

Homonyms are words that have the same pronunciation and spelling but have different meanings. Here are 10 visual examples to discuss with your children and for them to compose, say and write sentences about. Suitable also for English Language students.

A word work literacy activity PPT. 5 colour slides with 12 pictures of items that have spellings with either one or two words. Talk about and decide on the spellings of each picture then press the key or switch for the words to appear. Look out for any that could have a spelling with either one or two words. There are also 5 slides where the words are separated for children to join up to make compound words / one, or two linked words. Print these off for worksheets.

This activity can be shown on the whiteboard and children each given an answer sheet to mark off the missing words as they come to them. Alternatively, each of the 10 worksheets can be used on their own. Children complete the sentence with a missing word. The missing words are sometimes repeated such as ‘water’ and ‘chocolate’ but the containers or descriptions are different e.g. a bar of chocolate a box of chocolates This is a good speaking and listening activity and useful for those learning English.
